Alessandro Deljavan popped up on the screen with a mess of a wig plopped on his 26-year-old head.

“Tell me, do you like it?” the Italian pianist asked, mugging for the webcam.

Jade Simmons leaned back in her chair and laughed.

“I love it,” she said. “Kind of like ‘Bob Marley Comes to the Cliburn.’ ”

Their Skype chat will soon be shared with piano fans around the world. The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition – often referred to as the Olympics of the music world – opens Friday in Fort Worth. And Simmons, who lives in Humble, will be the face of the competition on the Cliburn’s webcast. From an orchestra-level box in Bass Performance Hall, she’ll guide an international audience through the competition’s 17 days and three elimination rounds, offering a mix of classical music analysis and some fun personal touches – including interviews with Deljavan and the rest of the 30 competitors, who hail from 13 countries.

Keep making those cracks!


I’ve been hesitant to write on this topic because even though I’ve had some serious successes and experienced some transitional breakthroughs, I was still waiting on my “big break”. So since I hadn’t had the big break I’d been envisioning yet, I felt like I had no right to write about it until it happened. Well, it happened. In the months to come, I’ll share the specific happening. But for now, I wanted to encourage those of you still waiting because no one knows better than me what that torturous waiting feels like.

When you’re waiting you’re going to start to wonder if you’re a). doing things that eventually will lead to something greater or b). are you just doing things the wrong way and that’s why nothing’s happening. Here’s the comforting answer, you’re only doing it wrongly if you’re pretending to be something you’re not or not really pursuing your true passion. Ask yourself, “Am I doing what I would still be doing if the biggest door possible opened for me?” You’re also doing it right if you’re operating on the highest level of where you ultimately want to be and not just where you are now. For instance, if you’re speaking in a room of 20 people but you thought you were going to be speaking to 1000 people, are you giving a puny version of your dynamite presentation to the small group or are you going all out like you would have for the 1000?

Some of you who are blogging, webinar-ing and making videos, creating content out the wazoo are wondering if no one’s reading and following and “liking” and commenting, am I creating for nothing? The answer is NO! That content will represent you well (if it’s done well) when the bigwigs come looking for you. They’ll find you exist in great abundance, they will have a record of your skill to consider.

Some of you are performing and comparing yourself to every wunderkind or 100 year old legend on the stages around you and wondering if there’s room for you on the stage and there truly is. It might not be the stage you imagined, but your audience is out there if you’ve been cultivating them. You see, we train our audiences to be ready for us and to expect a certain thing from us. Our job now as we’re waiting is to focus on crafting the experience we eventually want them to ask for by name.

The funny thing about breakthrough is that when it comes, there’s not necessarily confetti and noise makers. You’ll find it often comes nonchalantly as the reward for all the randomness your life seems to have been about, or a product of all the relentless toiling and preparation. It’s rarely a Cinderella story, though it might look that way to the public. It will feel like relief because what the breakthrough delivery man will tell you is stuff like this:

“We noticed you’ve been doing this…”, “We heard about you after someone told us they heard you in a room of 20 people…”, “I was reading your blog, an entry you wrote 2 years ago, and thought it would make a good book…”. And funnily enough, you’ll get a laid back call, an email from the breakthrough delivery guy as if they’d been planning to contact you all along, as if you’re such an obvious choice for their project, as if you’re worthy of being paid big bucks or operating on much larger stages. The reason is because you are. You’ll have on your spiked shoes, ready to leap over hurdles and jump through hoops but they won’t even ask you to, because you already have.

The time you’re spending right now waiting is really not waiting, it’s preparing. You must be ready for the big knock at the door, so keep toiling at your highest level, focus on the music that moves you, the projects that highlight your strengths. Work with people you can learn from. After you’ve toiled all you can, you’ll hit a wall, a great big wall of radio silence where it feels like you can’t penetrate anything. You can’t even get people to give you the courtesy of a rejection letter, you’ll feel ignored and wonder if it’s all been for naught. And right about then…knock, knock, knock.
